Today we’re remembering The Great Reformer, Martin Luther. On October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany — sparking the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

The 95 Theses were the differences that Luther found between the Roman Catholic Church and the Bible. People were being deceived about corruption in the church. Luther refused to keep silent and was eventually excommunicated from the Catholic Church, and later declared an outlaw and a heretic.

In April 1521, Luther appeared before Emperor Charles V to defend what he had taught and written. At the end of his speech, the story goes, he spoke the famous words, “Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God.”
