“A Church Growth principle is a universal truth which, when properly interpreted and applied, contributes significantly to the growth of churches and denominations. It is a truth of God which leads his church to spread his Good News, plant church after church, and increase his Body.” – Donald McGavran
We should all have an expectation of Church Growth. McGavran talks about the types of growth, and states there are three distinguishable kinds.
Biological Growth McGavran writes, “God commanded us to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. Christians should truly bring up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Yet this type of growth will never bring the nations to faith and obedience, since the non‑Christian part of the world’s population is growing faster than the Christian, and seems to be destined to continue to do so.”
You should have specific strategies to this. Let’s not forget that over 60% of people come to faith in Christ before age 17. If at all possible, create age‑based opportunities for people to hear and respond to the Gospel.
Transfer Growth This is an increase of certain congregations at the expense of others. For example, Nazarenes or Anglicans move from the country to the city, or an overpopulated area to new land that is opening up. Then these city or new land congregations, or what we might call suburban congregations, flourish. Those from which they have come diminish. Transfer growth is important. Every church should follow up with its members and conserve as many of them as possible, but transfer growth will never extend the church, for unavoidably, many are lost along the way.
Conversion Growth By definition, conversion growth occurs those outside the church come to rest their faith intelligently on Jesus Christ and are baptized and added to the Lord in His church. McGavran writes, “This is the only kind of growth by which the good news of salvation can spread to all the segments of society, and to Earth’s remotest bounds. The Great Commission patently requires enormous conversion growth.”
God’s will is for His church to grow. You have to believe in your heart that God wants your church to grow, but then there’s another decision. This is an alignment decision. God’s will is you determine what God wants and then you align yourself with it. You say, “This is what I want.” You have to make that decision.
The consequences of NOT making this decision can be dangerous. Don’t limit your ministry and hinder your calling to fulfill The Great Commission.
