Why Should You Study History? (Part 3)

A-Z-Conference-web-buttonIn preparation for my upcoming Church Growth and Evangelism A-Z Workshop, I  am continuing to give you my top reasons of why you should study history.

I am giving you reasons why studying history can make a direct and positive impact on your ministry!

Reason #3: It builds your faith.

When I read the stories of J Hudson Taylor, Dwight L. Moody, Henry Drummond or hear some of the issues that other great pastors before me have gone through…

When I experience the devotions of A.W. Tozer…

When I read about the life of John Wimber…

When you read about all of this… it builds your faith.

In preparing for these Church Growth Champions Tele seminars that I’m doing, I went back and reread some of those original books like “Bridges of God,” by Donald McGavran, “Your Church Can Grow” by Win Arn, some of those original books by Peter Wagner, including his commentary on “The Book of Acts,” or that great book that Elmer Towns wrote with Jerry Falwell called, “Church Alive.”

My faith was inspired. I found myself over and over praying this simple prayer, “God, do it again.”

When I first moved to New York City I made it a point to be a student of that city. I wanted to find out about those first Dutch churches in what was then called, “New Amsterdam.” I wanted to know about those first seminaries that were meeting there.

In fact, if you come to New York and I take you to pizza, chances are I’ll take you to a pizza place that used to be one of the first mega churches of New York City. When I go to those places it just inspires me, and it inspires you.

Harry Truman said one time, “There’s nothing new in the world, except the history you don’t know.” Be a student of history. Make it a part of your reading plan. You don’t have to read history fast, but read history.

You partner in ministry,

Nelson
