This week I’ve been preparing you to talk about the sometimes difficult subject of tithing.

Creating tithers builds naturally on the foundation already laid as we cultivated ‘first-time’ gifts and created regular givers. As with other levels, continuing education is key. As part of the ongoing stewardship teaching you must educate people to bring the full tithe to God as an act of joyful worship.

Don’t shy away from presenting the full truth on tithing as biblical stewardship during your messages on finances.

As you teach on tithing from the pulpit, make sure to highlight and thoroughly explain these three key truths:

1. Stewardship is a critical ingredient of discipleship.

2. God’s clear command is to bring the whole tithe to the local church.

3. As givers grow in the grace of giving, the church grows in its ability to do God’s work

Bringing the full tithe to God is a heart issue in two ways. First, it takes a submissive heart to be willing to give in a God-honoring way. Second, and perhaps more importantly, our people’s hearts must be in the right place as they give to God. We don’t give out of legalism, but because God has called us to.

You can also underscore the blessing of the tithing by having strong tithers give testimonies about God’s faithfulness. Testimonies connect with people on an emotional level. They are the most powerful tool for supporting your teaching.
