Dr. Elmer Towns recently spoke to my Renegade Pastors Network at our annual Renegade Pastors Conference. We had a great time and he shared a number of practical tips and tools with those in attendance. I wanted to share with you some of what I learned.
Dr. Elmer Towns doesn’t think of himself as a model for pastors. He identifies himself as “an author-teacher who loves to study, share and teach,” yet after more than 40 years of “teaching and over 170 popular and scholarly works, this college and seminary professor has educated, equipped and inspired spiritual leaders throughout the world”. A champion of “spiritual breakthroughs,” Dr. Towns has established himself as a well-respected advocate for achieving church growth through effective organization and leadership.
Vision preaching for big projects is one of the lessons shared in one of the sessions from Dr. Towns.
Here is what Dr. Towns shared about Vision:
According to Dr. Towns having a vision makes you a leader. He points out from the First Law of Leadership, that “When people buy into dreams/vision, they buy into your leadership.”
Getting Your Vision From God
Dr. Towns described vision-sermons as being born in intimacy with God, that grow in prayer and become mature with fasting. He encouraged pastors to preach the vision before your followers buy into it, and then preach it because they support it.
“I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am corrected. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry . . . but the just shall live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:1-4, NKJV).
Truths about vision:
- Vision comes to the spiritually alert.
- Vision gets stronger and clearer when you two-way communicate with God.
- The vision becomes the person.
- Write the vision.
- Need patience and flexibility before your vision may happen.
- Tie your vision to faith and supernatural.
There were many more insightful lessons given by Dr. Towns and other guest speakers. This was an absolutely phenomenal Renegade Pastors Conference – the best event we’ve had yet – and I don’t want to keep these church leader essentials a secret.
