Knowing How to Fight: One Day at a Time

“Don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” –Matthew 6:34

In this verse, Jesus encourages His followers not to worry about the future. He says, “Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In other words, you can fight against stress and frustrations only one day at a time. Tomorrow will have a whole new set of stressors and frustrations.

We like to think we know what’s going to happen in the future. But in reality, we don’t know what’s coming. A problem we thought was going to crush us might come to nothing, while something we never considered attacks us from behind. But we will never win playing the what-if game. We waste a lot of energy deciding how we are going to fight a battle that may never come our way.

Another problem with trying to fight future battles today is that we tend to make things that are unknown bigger and scarier than they actually are. We may believe we will fight a giant monster tomorrow when in reality, we will just need to swat away a few months. Don’t waste energy, time, and focus fighting a bigger enemy that doesn’t really exist.

Instead, focus all your energy on the battles at hand. Take the word of Jesus seriously, and leave tomorrow’s worries in the future.
