Four Foundational Skills Every Pastor Should Have

In preparing for leadership talks for a conference, it became clear to me that there are four key skills you must master in order to thrive as a pastor. Here they are (in no particular order):

  1. Keeping the Sabbath. A 24-hour period of when you cease your primary vocation.
  2. Time Management. Your success or failure every week is determined by your daily schedule.
  3. Reading. All leaders are readers.
  4. Managing change. It’s a critical skill to lead through and implement change.

These are the basic tools in your pastoral toolbox. Working on these will allow you to be more of the pastor God has called you to be.

Your partner in ministry,

Nelson
