I trust that my love and concern for the local church is clear – everything we do at The Journey and Church Leader Insights is driven by my belief in Christ and His Church as the hope of the world…
But today I have to point out something that pains me about the way most of us in church leadership function:
We’re way too cheap for our own (and our church’s) good!
Just a couple of weeks ago one of the guys on my staff mentioned that he got a great deal on some duct tape for a project he was working on (he had saved about $4 per roll).
After a little further conversation, it became clear to me that the savings came by simply purchasing the least expensive option he could find.
So, in what wasn’t a huge shock to me, guess what he had to go out and do a week later?
Yep, buy some better duct tape!
In other words, his “savings” ultimately cost us the entire price of the first batch of duct tape – because we had to buy it AND the higher quality tape to get the job done – not to mention the time it took to re-do the job.
Here’s a leadership lesson for you as you seek to be a good steward of your church’s finances:
Don’t make purchases solely on price…. Make purchases based on VALUE!
Otherwise, “church on the cheap” might just end up a lot more expensive in the long run.
