My Battle With Stress (and How I Manage It)

At age 13, I heard the word “stress” for the very first time.

I had sold my first computer program and was selected as one of the top entrepreneurs in the nation. But with success in the computer business came new challenges like writing a monthly column for a magazine and giving speeches for the first time.

My mom had me see a medical doctor who, believe it or not, prescribed “Stress Tabs” for me!

I immediately thought, even at 13, there has to be a better way to manage stress.

Fast forward to answering the call to ministry and starting The Journey Church. At the time I thought, “Hey, maybe ministry might be easier than the computer business.”

Well, you know how wrong that assumption was!

I don’t know if this coincided with the fact that I was turning 30 or if it coincided with the fact that I was starting a church, but for the first time these issues of stress were no longer things I could hide. They were having a visible, and I literally do mean visible, toll on my body.

The church was growing – and so was I. Eating to manage stress, I gained an average of 7 lbs a year for every year I was pastoring.

As you can imagine, this was a very non-productive stress management technique.

The negative effects of stress – physically, emotionally and mentally – can be damaging to anyone. But for pastors, it also affects our impact on the Kingdom in a profound way.

Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble,” and pastors are on the front lines. This ongoing stress can be a discouraging reality – IF you don’t have a way to manage it.

If left unchecked, stress can impede your life and ministry and derail your health, relationships and emotional well-being.

As you can see, I’ve been on this journey of stress management for over 30 years. I’ve experienced the stresses of ministry first-hand – and I want to help you take control TODAY through 10 best practices that I use in my daily ministry.
