Here’s why – when I first began pastoring, I had a “do-it-myself’ attitude. I was too timid to ask people to volunteer.

But as the church began to grow, I realized I wouldn’t be able to keep my head above water if something didn’t change. So one day I stood before the church and begged for volunteers.

Yes, I begged.

I begged people to serve in our nursery. I begged people to come in and serve during the week with administrative tasks. I begged people to lend a hand in any way possible. I even set up a committee to beg!

That worked fine in the short-term, but as I came to learn, begging isn’t a good long-term strategy . . .

Over time, I learned three key things:

1. I can’t lead a healthy church by myself (nor does God intend me to).

3. When more people are growing, they are more likely to live out their faith outside the walls of the church – and so reach even more people for Christ.
