My First Coaching Experience (Part 2)

My first pastor-to-pastor coaching relationship, which I talked about yesterday,  taught me a lot. Here are three truths I learned about coaching (I think these lessons will help you too, please keep reading)

– Coaching gives me a road map to faster growth and health. A road map that would normally take me years to discover myself. My coach showed me specific things I should and shouldn’t do. It was humbling as often my instincts were wrong and my coach gently corrected me.

– Coaching helps me avoid ministry potholes. This was big for me. It seemed as if God timed the monthly sessions just as I was about to do something I thought was right. But then my coach would show me a better way, a way that helped me avoid potential potholes that would have hurt or even ended my plan. I always walked away with a better plan. Why? My coach had already been down the road and knew the best way.

– Coaching provides me monthly accountability. As much as I learned from the calls, I realized I needed the calls even if I wasn’t learning anything. The calls gave me a monthly red mark in my calendar to get things done and stay on track. No wonder the first three years of our church was statistically our fastest growing period.

I learned much more but these were the main things. How about you? Have you ever considered a formal pastor-to-pastor coaching relationship?

Looking back, my experience was successful because:

A) I was ready and wanted to grow.
B) I was humble enough to submit to the coaching process.
C) I was open to new ideas and a better road map.

For me, coaching accelerated my growth and the growth of the church God had called me too. I later learned that coaching, on average, accelerates you at least 30% faster than doing it by yourself.

After my personal experience with coaching and the growth of our church, pastors started asking me to coach them. I’ll tell you that story next week.

To fast forward, since 2004, I’ve coached over 2100+ pastors and seen them experience tremendous growth. I’ve developed a road map that any pastor of any size and denomination can benefit.

More next week. Thanks for reading.
