The below excerpt is from my book The Renegade Pastor’s Guide to Time Management.
When you were a kid, games were an important part of learning. You learned how to interact with other people by playing with them. You learned how to play baseball or basketball or some other sport through playing it. But as you and I got older, many of us stopped playing–which is a shame. We learn things so much more quickly and effectively when we’re having fun.
Learning the principles and skills of time management is no exception. The benefits of making a game of time management include:
- Making time management enjoyable. You are more likely to stick with something you enjoy doing it. So why not learn to enjoy time management?
- Helping you be more creative with the application of new skills and techniques. You learn best when your mind is free to create and connect in different ways. When time management is a game, you can be more creative and increase your capacity for learning.
- Allowing you to get other people involved in the learning. People are more likely to help you with fun activities than with tasks they see as tedious or boring. Turning time management into a game encourages other people to also get involved in the fun of learning to manage time.
- Giving you a new approach for learning familiar skills. You may already know many of the things you need to do to manage your time more effectively–you just haven’t done them yet. Instead of seeing these things as chores or necessities, approach them as a great opportunity for learning.
