Your Assimilation system is your plan for taking people from their first visit to being fully developing members of your church. Evangelism and assimilation go hand in hand. In fact, many times, assimilation precedes evangelism because unreached people will often attend your church for quite a while before making a decision to follow Jesus.
You can’t simply expect your first-time guests to come back without intentional action on your part. You have to make sure you are creating environments that will make them feel comfortable and welcome—environments they will be excited to return to. To be growing consistently, you need to keep one in five of your first-time guests. What can you do to see those results? As you begin thinking through your basic assimilation process, consider these questions:
- How do you know who your first-time guests are each Sunday?
- How do you make sure to collect every first-time guest’s contact information?
- Is your service guest friendly? In other words, is it clear where to check in kids, find a restroom and enter the worship area?
- How are you following up with first-time guests to ensure a second visit?
If you will create an environment where your first-time guests feel welcomed and have a good experience, they will be much more likely to return for a second visit—then for a third and a fourth visit, as they begin the journey toward becoming fully-engaged members. But if you aren’t ready to serve them properly the first time they show up, you may never see them again. Don’t overlook the importance of establishing a system to help you invest in those God sends your way.
