I love systems. In fact, there’s an entire approach to church that we call the “healthy church, healthy systems” approach, where I teach you the eight systems of a church. I’ve written books that tie in to each of those systems, to help you apply them in your life. I’ve developed resources for each of those systems, and on and on. You can find out about the church systems in other places and in other resources that I’ve developed.
But today, I want to share with you some advice on developing a Reading System.
What’s going to be your system for reading? You need a process for reading. You need a set way to go about your reading.
My favorite definition of “system” is actually an acrostic of the word SYSTEM. Here’s what it is.
A system is anything that:
S– saves
Y– you
S– stress
T– time
E– energy and
M– money
Right now, maybe your lack of a reading system, or your poor reading system, is adding stress to your life. Maybe you feel a little guilty, or you feel a little stressed‑out because you can’t get to all the books that you want to get to.
It’s costing you time. What if there is a better way to read a book than what you’re doing right now?
Connected to that, of course, is saving yourself energy. Physical energy as well as mental and emotional energy. But then also, by not reading the books, you’re wasting emotional energy. You’re wasting physical energy because you don’t know what you don’t know. The books that you don’t read can’t help you.
Of course it’s costing you money as well, because even though a book only costs $9 or $19, or even some of the more expensive ones, $49 or $59, that’s not the true value of a book. It may cost $19 to buy the paper, but the ideas inside that book can be priceless. I think you would agree that a $19 book could save you $1,900 in life and ministry.
What is going to be your reading system to save yourself stress, time, energy and money? Do you have a written plan for how you’re going to go about reading and accomplishing your reading goals?
I want to help you too! In my brand new resource “How to Read More Seminar,” I give you twelve simple steps to help learn how to develop and hone your reading skills so that you can grow as a leader more quickly and increase your capacity to read and comprehend more!
This opportunity ends Friday, August 9th!
