2 Methods to Mobilize New Volunteers in Your Church

I’ve now been in ministry over two decades, coached more than 1,200 pastors and connected with tens of thousands through the ministry of Church Leader Insights and there’s one phrase I don’t think I’ve ever heard…

We just have too many volunteers!

No, the work we do as church leaders will always involve willing volunteers to do the work of ministry so we can focus our efforts on equipping them to do so.

A clear theology of ministry is the starting point for a healthy Ministry System.

That entails an understanding that the Bible teaches that every member should be a minister and that serving is a key catalyst for spiritual growth.

Once you understand that, you need to create something that I call “First Serve Opportunities.”

In terms of your Ministry System, these are clear “on-ramps” for people to get their first taste of serving and it serves to quickly expand your volunteers.

Here are two ways to mobilize new people to serve in your church:

1) Increase the number of new people in current ministry positions.

In other words, this means getting more people plugged into the volunteer roles that already exist.

2) Recruit new people to new ministry positions.

This is the fun part – sitting down and getting creative about some new opportunities for people to serve in your church.

By implementing both of these methods and casting a vision for how those roles impact the mission of your church, you can quickly see an increase in the number of new volunteers (and the number of growing disciples)!

P.S. This is just one of the many proven principles of a healthy Ministry System that I share in my brand new book (available on Amazon), “Connect: How to Double Your Number of Volunteers.”
