October marks 25 years since I began to sense God calling me into ministry and calling me to Himself. I’ve made a lot more than one mistake in ministry, but as I’ve reflected on the past 25 years, there’s one thing that has stood out the most as far as what’s on my heart. One thing that, if the Lord wills it, I’d like to fix in the next 25 years…
In October 1990 I took my first job in ministry (part-time) as Minister of Outreach and Evangelism. It was at a Baptist Church of about 275 in a small town within 20 miles of my alma mater, Gardner-Webb University.
Soon I was invited to preach on Sunday nights. The pastor told me that when you give people an invitation, you’re inviting them to:
- Become a Christian – to get saved
- Join the church.
- Surrender to the call to preach.
But somewhere along the way, I missed out on one of these invitations that my early pastor taught me to give.
Tomorrow I’ll share that #1 mistake in my first 25 years of ministry – and how I plan to correct it in the next 25!
Your partner in ministry,
Nelson
