How to Strengthen Your Personal and Spiritual Foundation

When you’re feeling out of sorts, you may need to strengthen your personal and spiritual foundation.

There are two main categories to consider when doing this: public activities and private disciplines. When you are feeling emotionally drained, anxious, or depressed, lean even harder on both. Make sure to be intentional about the following:

  • Your connection with your church. Stay connected to your church, even when you may not feel like it. Get up, get dressed, and get there, no matter how hard it is. The enemy would love nothing more than to separate you from God’s family when you are struggling. And on that note…
  • Your connection with your small group. Don’t let feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or even just general malaise keep you from getting together with your like-minded friends. The healthy relationships in your life are critical when you are feeling emotionally drained or distraught. Let people surround you, encourage you, and help you walk through whatever is bothering you.
  • Your daily time with God. Part of staying emotionally healthy is carving out time to get quiet with God every day. Tell him when you feel anxious. Talk to him about what you are struggling with. Read his Word and listen to how he wants to guide you. He will calm your emotions and encourage you in the right direction every time.
  • As you do these things on an ongoing basis, you will naturally be more prepared to deal with the difficult emotions you face day to day. When particularly emotional circumstances come up, press even harder into the One who gives you everything you need to face them with strength.
